What is counselling?

Counselling provides a safe and confidential space for you to talk about any issues or concerns you have. Together with your counsellor you will explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours which will allow you to develop a better understanding of yourself and others.

Your counsellor will not give you advice, opinions or medication. They will work with you to find your own solutions such as making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems.

Different counsellors work in different ways, it is important that you find someone that you feel comfortable with who works in a way that suits you. I offer an initial 15 consultation for you to ask any questions and get a feel for whether you want us to work together.

What to expect

Prior to your first session, we can arrange a telephone or online consultation to discuss what you would like to achieve from counselling. This initial consultation also works as an opportunity for you to see if you feel that I am the right person for you to work with.  You are under no obligation to have further sessions following the initial consultation.

At the first session we will talk about what you want to achieve from counselling and work together in exploring how to make that happen. This gives you the opportunity to experience my counselling approach. The following sessions will focus on the issues that you wish to work on in counselling. Sessions will go at your pace, exploring what you feel comfortable with as you go.

The number of sessions varies according to individual need. Some people prefer to work short term, over 6-12 sessions, others prefer to work long term, this is something we will explore in the first session.
